Biography: Constance of Castile was the Duchess of Lancaster, daughter of King Peter of Castile and wife to John of Gaunt. She had two children: a son, John, who died in his first year and a daughter, Catherine of Lancaster.

Through her father King Peter, who had been deposed and killed by his half-brother King Henry II, she held a claim to the throne of Castile. Her husband sought to claim this title, but his efforts were ultimately unsuccessful.

Constance was made a lady of the Garter in 1378, a member of the Order of the Garter, a chivalric order founded by Edward III of England.
