Biography: Hal Evan Sutton is an American professional golfer known for his accomplishments on the PGA Tour. He turned professional in 1981 and made a significant impact on the golfing world with 14 PGA Tour victories.
His most remarkable achievements include winning the 1983 PGA Championship and the Players Championships in both 1983 and 2000. Sutton also led the PGA Tour money list in 1983 and was named the PGA Player of the Year that same year.
Sutton's career began at Centenary College, where he was a standout player and the 1980 College Player of the Year. His early years on the PGA Tour were marked by rapid success, including his first win at the 1982 Walt Disney World Golf Classic.
He experienced a notable slump from 1987 to 1994, however, during which he struggled to maintain his tour card. He made a comeback in 1995 with a win at the B.C. Open and, in 2000, Sutton notably defeated Tiger Woods in The Players Championship.
Beyond his playing career, Sutton was known for his contributions to team competitions. He played on four U.S. Ryder Cup teams and served as the non-playing captain in 2004. His captaincy was noted for the controversial decision to pair Tiger Woods with Phil Mickelson.
Off the course, Sutton was recognized for his charitable efforts, including establishing a children's hospital in Shreveport and raising funds for hurricane relief. He received the Payne Stewart Award in 2007 for these contributions.
Sutton transitioned to the PGA Tour Champions in 2008, achieving notable results including a tie for third at the Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am in 2009. He has four children and resides in Bossier City, Louisiana.
